With one game still remaining in the 2024/25 league season the top four places in La Liga are already decided. FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Athletic Club fill the top spots and that means all four clubs will compete in the Spanish Super Cup in January 2026. 

Teams that finish in the top two in La Liga and the two finalists of the Copa del Rey usually take their place in the competition. However, as this season first and second in the league, Barça and Real Madrid, also met in the final of the Copa del Rey, the teams that finished in third and fourth in the league, Atlético and Athletic Club, take their places in the Super Cup.

Barça face Athletic Club again

In the semi-finals of the competition La Liga champions Barça will face fourth placed Athletic Club, just as they did in 2025. The other semi-final will see a Madrid derby between Atlético and Real. 

All four clubs have had success in the competition in the past. The blaugranes have won the Spanish Super Cup on 15 occasions, more than anyone, with their nearest rivals being Real Madrid on 13. Athletic Club have lifted the cup on three occasions, as have Deportivo La Coruña, and finally Atlético have won the trophy twice. 

Champions League teams 

In next season's Super Cup, all four teams will also be taking part in the 2025/26 Champions League as opposed to the 2025 edition which saw Barça, Real Madrid, Athletic Club and Mallorca take part with only the first two teams involved in Europe's top club competition. This season La Liga has an extra place in the 2025/26 Champions League with fifth placed finishers in the league Villarreal also having sealed their place in the UEFA competition.
