Xavi: 'Araujo red card changed everything'

Coach laments elimination from the Champions League, insisting that the Uruguayan's sending off was 'far too much' of a punishment for Barça

Everything was going fine in Tuesday's Champions League quarter final second leg until the referee chose to send off Ronald Araujo in the 27th minute. “That's when another game started”, said Xavi afterwards. And PSG won that 'other game' 4-0 to march into the semi-finals. "That incident changed the whole tie, for me it was excessive to bring out a red card."

“We were fuming because we were in order. Lamine Yamal was doing well but we needed a bit more control and that's why I decided to send on Iñigo."

"A whole season's work came to nothing because of a refereeing decision. But I think we have had a highly dignified Champions League. And tonight we managed to create very clear chances to win the game, especially when it was still 3-1."

Had any of those chances gone in, the game would have gone into extra time. Instead, Xavi and his players can only dwell on what have been.
